Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Have your taxes prepared for free!

Volunteers needed for 2017 tax filing season

Since 2009, the SpiriTrust Lutheran Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has relied on the time and talents of individual volunteers and the generosity of local businesses and organizations to help us provide free preparation of federal, state and local tax filings for low-income to moderate-income individuals and households.

The upcoming tax filing season is no exception. Volunteers are needed to help us meet the growing need for tax filing assistance in our community. Opportunities exist for tax preparers, phone schedulers and greeters. No prior experience is needed and training will be provided for all positions.

If you are interested in serving and have a few hours a week to give, please complete our online contact form or contact Rob Morgan at 717.854.2244 or rmorgan@spiritrustlutheran.org.

  • Greets all taxpayers upon entering the site and uses a check-off sheet to sign-in taxpayers needing assistance.
  • Gives each taxpayer an Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet for completion; completes a quick screening to determine type of assistance required; and ensures taxpayers have all the required documents that will be needed to complete the return.
  • Requires no tax law training.
  • Must commit to a minimum of three (3) hours per week during tax season.

If interested, please contact Rob Morgan at 717.854.2244 or rmorgan@spiritrustlutheran.org.

Provides professional and accurate free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers at designated VITA tax preparation locations. The Tax Preparer also:

  • Verifies the taxpayer’s identity and conducts a thorough verbal interview with the client using the Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet as a guide.
  • Ensures that taxpayer’s return includes all income and all applicable deductions and credits.
  • Receives free tax law training and IRS Certification.
  • Must commit to a minimum of three (3) hours per week during tax season.
